Preparing a child for their first musical theatre audition can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. Here are some steps to help guide you and your child through the process:

1. Understand the Audition Requirements

  • Read the Audition Notice Carefully: Make sure you understand all the details, including the date, time, location, what materials are required, and any specific instructions regarding songs, monologues, or dance routines.

  • Song Selection: If a specific song is not required, choose a piece that showcases your child's vocal range and acting abilities. Avoid songs that are too popular or overdone unless your child can bring something unique to the performance. Accompaniment or Vocal Tracks are not permitted. We require all auditioners to prepare the first verse of the song What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. We have taken the liberty of providing a PDF version of the sheet music.  See below.

3. Song and Monologue Preparation

  • Practice the Song: Help your child learn the lyrics, melody, and rhythm. Make sure the song is memorized.

  • Need Extra Help? Consider a vocal lesson. You may contact Kirk Pfeiffer to schedule a private vocal lesson at BroadwayAccessCHS@gmail.com. Fees for private lessons are listed HERE.

4. Dress Appropriately

  • Audition Attire: Choose an outfit that is comfortable, neat, and allows your child to move freely. Hair should be neat and out of face. If you have long hair, bring a hair tie in case you are asked to dance.

  • Footwear: Jazz shoes are appropriate; however, auditioning in socks is completely fine. No need buy a pair of dance shoes for an audition.

5.  The Day of the Audition

  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive at least 15-30 minutes before the scheduled audition time. In theatre, we say that being on time is 15 minutes early.

  • Bring Water and Snacks: Keep your child hydrated and energized.

  • Be Supportive but Not Overbearing: Be present, but allow your child to take ownership of the experience. We encourage parents to help their child sign in but then leave and let them soar! If your child needs accommodations, please contact us in advance at BroadwayAccessCHS@gmail.com.

  • ENJOY THE PROCESS!! Remind your child that the most important part of any audition is to enjoy performing and learning. It's an opportunity to grow and express themselves in front of warm supportive people that are excited to hear and meet them! Parents, guardians, or friends are not permitted in the audition room. No exceptions.

With these steps, your child will be well-prepared and feel more confident going into their first musical theatre audition.
